august garden

Everything is in full bloom. I’ve been harvesting sage, chamomile, lovage, cress, basil, and catnip. Oh and of course my own tomatoes! Even my farmshare tomatoes aren’t as good as mine straight off the vine. Eggplant, zukes, and beans will be rolling in soon. This season has been lovely. I wish I could visit the garden at night. A perfect place to watch the meteors rain down.

Beautiful and sad as I realize that my tomatoes all have the blight and it is race against time. They need to ripen before it creeps up and rots the stalk.

Canadian poet Susan Musgrave’s poem is on my mind. I want to live inside her poem.

Another week and the tomatoes grow redder. We keep forgetting our cameras. I think we are just too busy watching the birds of prey and weeding. Tonight we saw an osprey sailing in the sky.

Apparently tomatoes love flash flooding. It also brought my cabbages back from the dead but they look a little mildewy.

I harvested cress, mint, basil, lovage and some catnip for my little Miles. Thanks to a couple of garden helpers I actually managed to just sit in my garden chair, chill, and watch the hawks ride the currents high above the July corn.

I learned recently that there are some guerilla gardners here who’ve planted “Community Corn” on unused plots! Which makes me think when does a large communal garden become a full-out anarchist farm collective?

On Tuesday I turned a quarter of my plot and weeded. Hand tools only.

Today I put in a scratch and sniff herb garden. I have fallen head over heels for the curry plant. It apparently repels moths so my sweaters will thank me.

I put in late season carrots, beets and bean seeds. Squash, pumpkin, eggplant, cress and tomato plants are in too. Realistically I would be happy if I could just get beets. Please bunnies eat someone else’s beets.

I got a community garden plot! 27 x 27 that is all mine until october when we till it in.

So late in the season I’ve got to get out there with a pitchfork and some garlic? beans? herbs? squash? flowers? Tonight I’m going to take wendell berry’s mad farmer poems to bed and see what i dream up.
